Soybean lowering effect on cholesterol is as beneficial as statins. ‘Comparable’ to a statin: Soybean could cut cholesterol by 70%, says the new study.

New research discovered that soybean could slash cholesterol by a whopping 70%, “comparable” to simvastatin.

High cholesterol is a “silent killer” that negatively affects cardiovascular health, increasing your risks of heart disease and stroke risks. So sometimes doctors prescribe a medication called statins. Statins step in to reduce the amount of cholesterol produced by your body. But statins have their side effects. The good news is that soybean could also be very effective, thanks to new research.

Many people add a splash of soy milk to their coffee or mix in grilled tofu cubes to their noodles – soybeans have become a plant-based staple for them.

Soy is rich in vitamins and minerals. It has become popular lately, and for a good reason. It has been associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular problems like heart disease and stroke.

If you think soybean is a plant-based food good only for vegans, this new research might change your perception.

According to the research published in the journal Antioxidants, soy flour rich in protein B-conglycinin can potentially decrease “bad” cholesterol levels. So much so the research team found that this soy product reduced high cholesterol and other lipid levels by as much as a whopping 70 percent.

In addition, humble soy also reduces the risk of metabolic diseases like fatty liver disease and atherosclerosis, which are associated with the build-up of fats in your blood vessels.

Elvira de Mejia, the study’s author, explained: “As we hypothesized, soybeans’ impact on cholesterol metabolism is not only due to their protein concentrations and composition but also because of the peptides embedded in them that are emitted during gastrointestinal digestion.”
